Will My New Acne Treatment Irritate My Sensitive Skin?

May20 2011 - Acne

Acne can affect people of all ages and all skin types. Most conventional treatments rely on harsh ingredients and complicated multi-step regimens to treat acne blemishes. These products can be especially irritating to sensitive skin. The last thing you need when trying a new treatment is to have a reaction and break out in a rash!

Having sensitive skin doesn’t mean you have to give up on treating your acne. There are products available that help get rid of acne—quickly– without aggravating sensitive skin. Many “experts” advise people with sensitive skin to avoid products with the ingredient benzoyl peroxide. This is only true for products that use benzoyl peroxide in an antiquated form.

Benzoyl peroxide works in two ways to eliminate acne. The first is direct contact of the benzoyl peroxide with the acne plug. When the benzoyl peroxide comes in contact with the pimple- it oxidizes the sebum—(an oily fluid produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands)–causing the plug to essentially liquefy, opening the pore. Next, the oxidized sebum migrates into the pore–working as an anti-bacterial agent.

If the benzoyl peroxide is too concentrated in one area–all of the available sebum can be oxidized, leaving residual benzoyl peroxide on the skin’s surface.

The benzoyl peroxide and excess oxidized sebum can react with the healthy skin causing irritation and redness. The cause for this over abundance of benzoyl peroxide is the particle size (40 to 60 microns)–the benzoyl peroxide particle size used in conventional acne products.

However, there is a new acne product on the market that utilizes an advanced form of the ingredient.  The special micronized benzoyl peroxide used in AcneCare ClearTech™ Treatment has been ground to a mean particle size of just 5 microns. At this particle size–and using the highest level of benzoyl peroxide necessary for maximum effectiveness—this formulation produces much less irritation to the skin and penetrates the pores more deeply and effectively to target the sebum and bacteria that cause acne.

AcneCare ClearTech™ Treatment also contains :

  1. A peptide that prevents and reverses signs of inflammation and irritation and helps to maintain and restore a normal skin sensitivity threshold
  2. A combination of two polysaccharides to maintain micro-capillary integrity and increase skin elasticity and resiliency
  3. An anti-oxidant that reduces inflammation, the formation of free radicals and erythema.

This strategic combination of advanced micronized benzoyl peroxide and powerful cosmeceutical ingredients provides the balanced approach needed to effectively treat acne–quickly–without irritation to sensitive skin.
